Technically The Bourbon Trail is not near The Great Loop route but when you have friends that live in Columbus, OH and you decide to meet halfway between each other then a weekend of bourbon tasting around Bardstown, KY is the perfect place to meet.
We stayed at an amazing AirBnB right downtown called The Coppersmith Shop which was built in 1790 and has a lot of the historic charm still in place. Tours and tastings were at Wild Turkey, 1792, Willett, Heaven Hill and Maker’s Mark. Each distillery had a fantastically different tour of the process and property. From small production to ginormous we learned something new from each tour guide.
Besides catching up with our friends Ray and Emily the highlight had to be dinner at Maker’s Mark. Three course meal with paired cocktails (bourbon of course) – felt like we were back in foodie Portland.
Heartbeat is now a bit heavier with the addition of several new bottles from our weekend. For those bourbon fans out there it’s well worth the trip and for those who are not necessarily fans it is still a ton of fun filled with interesting history.
(We will get pictures up on this blog at some point soon, started playing with the feature but obviously didn’t get very far.)
